TOYS are coming in at a steady rate for the annual toy appeal by the Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Pat Jackson, but there are still far from enough to meet the demand.
The toys are distributed to local children in need, often members of low-income families who cannot afford to give them the sort of presents enjoyed by more fortunate youngsters.
Last year more than 600 youngsters received surprise Christmas gifts through the appeal.
"We have had quite a good response so far but not quite as good as last year," said the Councillor Jackson.
"I gather that they tend to come in more quickly as we head into December and as people undertake their own Christmas shopping. But I hope people will respond as soon as they can as we need time to ensure the presents are distributed in time for Christmas.
"Adding a toy on to the shopping list for a needy local child could help to transform their Christmas and it could be one of the few gifts they receive."
Toys, preferably new and not gift wrapped, can be handed in at any of the council's local offices, at libraries or the town hall.
Donations would also be welcomed and cheques, payable to St Helens MBC (Toy Appeal), can be sent to Keith Wakefield, Social Services Department, Red Bank, Winwick Road, Newton-le-Willows, St Helens, WA12 8EA (tel. 01925 224621).
