A SUCCESSFUL scheme to encourage improvement of commercial property at Newton-le-Willows is to be extended.
Work is underway on the second phase of the project as part of the Newton 21 SRB programme.
The area covered is being widened to include all remaining commercial properties in Earlestown town centre, together with properties including Wargrave Road and Park Road South.
"Many traders in the area have already taken advantage of the benefits of this scheme and I hope that many more will now follow their lead," said the chairman of Newton 21 SRB, Councillor Marie Rimmer. "It is a very good deal offering the opportunity for a new look to shop premises with the owner or trader having to find only a quarter of the cost.
"It is all part of an ongoing effort by the council to improve the environment in Newton and Earlestown and bring greater prosperity to the area. I believe it has already made a considerable contribution to the quality of the environment in Earlestown and Newton High Street."
Under the project, all commercial property owners and tenants with a five-year lease are eligible for grants towards the cost of external improvement works.
Work can include new shop fronts, brick clearing and re-pointing, external decoration, security improvements, landscaping or new signs.
Most approved work would attract a 75 per cent grant.
The Frank Whittle Partnership - Newton 21's consultants - can provide further information and, if a trader decides to go ahead, will draw up a schedule and specification and obtain any necessary permissions required for the work. They will also obtain a competitive tender from the approved quality contractor for consideration by the applicant.
"The contractor we employ is a member of the Considerate Constructors scheme and where possible, will carry out the work in such a way that businesses can carry on trading while it is in progress with the minimum of disruption," said Councillor Rimmer.
Further details on the project are available from St Helens Council on 456185 or the Frank Whittle Partnership on 01722 259824.
