A STUNNING mosaic panel forms the centrepiece to a community garden in Burnley.
The Stoneyholme Community Garden was designed by Burnley Council's parks services with help from members of the local community.
Youngsters from Stoneyholme School and local community groups were involved in the design and construction of the mosaic, and also helped with the planting.
Two people who live nearby act as volunteer keyholders who lock and unlock the gates to the garden and keep an eye on the area. Cherry Trotter, senior landscape officer for Burnley Council, said there had been a need for open space in Stoneyholme, which was a densely built-up area.
She said she hoped the garden was "an attractive place for people to walk and sit in and young children to play in, and one which the local community feels belongs to them."
The project has been entered for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards, which honours all kinds of environmental improvement schemes.
The competition is run in conjunction with the Environment Agency, Groundwork, British Aerospace and the Tidy Britain Group.
The closing date for entries is Friday, December 10. For details call 01254 678678 ext 244.
