WORKERS in the North West make less and spend less than employees in the rest of the country, according to a report.

Disposable income per person in the North West last year was less than £8,500 compared with almost £9,500 nationally.

According to the figures, 11.5 per cent of men in the region earned between £351 and £400 a week in 1998, 11.1 per cent earned between £401 and £460 and 4.4 per cent were paid more than £800.

Around 15 per cent of female workers earned between £251 and £300 a week with only 3.8 per cent receiving more than £800 compared with 7.2 per cent in the UK.

The latest edition of North West plc also revealed that North West companies invested more than £1billion on research and development in 1998 - the third highest figure among the English regions.
