A ROGUES' gallery of photographs on a wall in the Operation Flaunt incident room at Burnley police station includes some with "sold" stickers across them indicating the person has been remanded in custody.

They are among 31 people who have been arrested since the operation targeting known criminals in the Pennine police division was launched with dawn raids last Thursday.

Some of those targeted are alleged to be responsible for as many as 30 crimes a day.

Also on the incident room walls are graphs measuring crimes and incidents to "tolerance" targets, the levels in December last year.

The "tolerance" level for all crime in the Pennine division, which includes Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale is 53, with burglaries at 18.

Insp Mike Bryant said: "We are well below that and we intend to make sure we continue to stay there."

Violence figures doubled at the weekend while auto crime remains high. Those areas will now be looked at again.

Officers are continuing to target known offenders and to use various means of disrupting their activity.

Insp Bryant said: "Most of those arrested will get conditional bail. We will be watching to make sure they keep to those conditions such as curfew etc.

"If they don't, they will be taken back to court.

"Results are now beginning to show. We are trying our hardest to disrupt the activity of these prolific criminals."

Crime prevention exercises are taking place parallel to the targeting of criminals.

An extensive operation will take place in Burnley car parks on Saturday to advise motorists. It will then spread to other parts of the division.
