A HEADTEACHER was attacked by a gang of youths who walked into the school grounds during a morning break.

Allan Grey was assaulted at Moorhead High School, Cromwell Avenue, Accrington, on Tuesday. Police received a call from the school at 11.19am saying 10 Asian youths had been causing trouble.

A school statement said: "An incident took place during morning break on Tuesday involving a small group entering the school grounds without permission. A member of staff received a slight injury during the incident but returned to duty at lunch time.

"The matter was immediately reported to the police and is now subject to investigation."

The school today said that Mr Grey was not at the school and would be off for the rest of the week.

A police spokesman today confirmed that Mr Grey had been attacked.

He added: "We got a call from the school at 11.19am saying 10 Asian youths were causing trouble. By 11.20am we had officers there but by the time we arrived the Asian youths had left.

"Our inquiries are continuing to trace them. They were looking for them on CCTV."

A parent of a pupil at the school, who did not want to be name, today said: "The headmaster was knocked to the ground and had to go to hospital.

"He returned back later that day but was not allowed to drive.

"He didn't attend the parents' evening on Tuesday."

Brian Hunt, 47, of Queens Road West, Accrington, said whose son Dominic, 15, attends the school, said: "Four youths were attacking the head master Mr Grey. My son and two of his mates saw this and tried to intervene. Dominic tried to look after the headmaster, who was on the floor.

"Mr Grey got taken to hospital and a load of youths threatened my son and said they were going to kill him. They said they were going to get him out of school."
