I AM looking into the war time crash of a Halifax bomber which came down near here in Wales.
The intention is to collect reminiscences of those on the ground and attempt to contact any surviving relatives of the seven men who died. The MoD tell me that an air gunner, 2209393, Sgt Peter Rogerson, came from Overton near Lancaster. I wonder if you can put something in your newspaper to help me locate any friends or relatives of the above. The details of the crash are as follows. On the night of January 3, 1944 a Halifax Bomber No 1658 Conversion Unit RICCALL (near Selby) took off on a training flight with seven crew on board. Over Pentrefoelas in Wales it plummeted to earth killing everyone. The wreckage was so complete that no cause was ever found. No memorial exists and these men have been forgotten (5,000 men of Bomber command were killed during training). Three of the crew members from the commonwealth are buried in Chester cemetery. The others were probably taken back to their home towns for burial. Any information about Sgt Rogerson would be appreciated.
