WESTFIELD Street was closed on the morning of Friday, December 3 after winds of 80 to 90 mph loosened lead flashing on the roof of the SmithKline Beecham Building. A spokesman for St Helens College said that the loose flashing was spotted at 9am and nothing could be done to make the building safe until the winds had died down.
"As a result, it was decided after consultation with the fire brigade, local authority and police, to close Westfield Street until the building had been made safe. At 4pm firefighters were able to get access to the roof and make it safe."
