FORMER Great Britain Rugby League tourist Willie Aspinall is looking forward to devoting more time to the gentler sporting pursuits of golf and dominoes after calling time on his career in the licensed trade!
For the 57-year-old, who toured Australia and New Zealand with the British Lions in 1966, this week bade a fond farewell to the regulars at the Eagle and Child in Church Road, Rainford, which he and wife Linda have managed for 11 years and eight months.
Before that, the couple - who have two children, Warren (31) and 29-year-old Nicola, and three grandchildren - were mine host and hostess at the Ram's Head, Haydock and the Unicorn, Billinge.
Something of a surprise choice for that 1966 touring party, half-back Willie, who played for Warrington and Rochdale Hornets, fully justified his call-up by making the most appearances of any squad member, thanks to his ability to play in all the back positions.
And the former Parr Central pupil, who was born and bred in Merton Bank Road, Pocket Nook, made his only Test appearance in a victory over New Zealand at Auckland in August, 1966.
A keen golfer, Willie, who was captain of the Greenalls Golf Society in 1993, is relishing the prospect of a well-earned retirement, even though he has enjoyed his time behind the bar.
He told the Star: "I'm sad to be leaving the Eagle and Child, but I have got to say that I'm really looking forward to a life of leisure and intend to have a really relaxing holiday in the sun."
Linda, though, will have to wait a little longer before putting her feet up. Quipped Willie: "I am currently looking for a job for Linda. She is seven years younger than me, so she can't be giving up work just yet!"
