REGARDING the de-selection of Blackburn Labour councillor Dorothy Greenwood (LET, December 14), I can't help wondering what heinous crime she has committed to warrant such a punishment.

Whatever the crime, I can only think that the punishment is rather severe for someone who has no doubt given loyal service to the party for many years.

Still, I have no doubt that Labour will have a ready-made candidate to impose upon the voters of the ward and Coun Greenwood may take some comfort from the knowledge that she is joining an illustrious band of current and ex-councillors who have suffered the wrath of the party for various misdemeanours down the years.

After all, she need only speak to her own husband or to Mike Madigan or to Coun Bill Taylor, who, at one time or another, had to suffer the juvenile antics that seem to be an everyday occurrence in Blackburn Council chambers.

J SHACKLETON (Mr), Reservoir Street, Darwen.
