FA Cup 3rd round: Bolton Wanderers 1 Cardiff City 0

BOLTON'S Franck Passi waited a whole month to earn himself a contract extension at the Reebok Stadium - but did more than enough to win a permanent deal with an inspired performance against Cardiff City in Wanderers third round FA Cup tie against Cardiff last night.

The 33-year-old French midfielder, snapped up on a month's contract from Spanish outfit Compostela last month, had only made one substitute appearance prior to the clash, postponed from December 11.

But he left the ground a hero in the eyes of everyone who mattered: "He gave us something we've not had since I've been here," said boss Sam Allardyce.

Passi set up Bolton's first half winner with an incisive through ball to Ricardo Gardner on 29 minutes.

When keeper John Hallworth bravely blocked his shot, the ball fell for Claus Jensen, who squared for Eidur Gudjohnsen to snatch the winner.

But Bolton could have won by more, Gudjohnsen and strike partner Bob Taylor both slicing wide in front of open goals.

Bolton win a place in the FA Cup fourth round at Grimsby Town.

Team: Banks, Whitlow, Bergsson, Johansen, Jensen, Taylor (Aljofree 89), Gardner, Gudjohnsen, Fish, Passi, Holden.
