ON behalf of Oxfam, may I thank the people of East Lancashire for their continued generous support and kindness?

The response to our emergency appeals in response to the crises in Kosovo and in the aftermath of the cyclone in India was truly heart-warming.

Oxfam works in 73 countries around the world, including Great Britain. We work to overcome poverty and suffering, to alleviate the vulnerability of poor people to conflict and natural calamity.

In Blackburn, we wish to thank all our sponsors, customers and volunteers and all who knit and donate and who are contributing to saving lives.

May I ask readers to consider spending just four hours a week helping us in our shop, raising funds and, just as importantly, gaining work experience and meeting new friends. I may be contacted on 01254 679804.

LORI MARSDEN (Mrs), Manager, Oxfam Shop, Lord Square, Blackburn.
