BLACKPOOL shoppers are splashing out to make it an extra special Christmas this year.
That's the message from town centre stores who report that shoppers are defying the bad weather to stock up with gifts and presents for the big day.
Although general trading has been quiet, shops have reported a massive demand for anything to do with Christmas and are expecting an extra busy time next week in the run-up to the big day.
Deputy manager of Blackpool's Marks and Spencer store Hilary Wilkinson said: "It is a pretty hard time for retailers generally, especially in Blackpool, and clothes sales are fairly slow.
"But shoppers are going mad for gifts and anything to do with Christmas.
"Cream liqueurs are selling extremely well as are selection boxes, Christmas puddings and bottles of wine. Gift ideas such as toiletries are also selling very well.
"People have not got a lot of money to spend but it seems they are determined to treat their friends and family for Christmas!" Toy shops also reported brisk trade with shoppers clearing the shelves of the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? board game based on the hit TV quiz. Beatties of London assistant manager Alan Roberts said: "We have have sold out but are hoping to get more in stock next week.
"We have been really busy for the past few weeks and are really pleased with how sales are going.
"The children are going crazy for anything to do with Pokemon, the Japanese cartoon character, whether it be computer games or key rings.
"Wrestling figures are popular with the kids this year. Computer games and radio controlled cars are also doing well but there is still a demand for the old favourites like Action Man and Barbie dolls."
For Blackpool town centre manager Nigel Hanson the news confirms the success of attracting shoppers to the resort.
He said: "We have had our work cut out this year with awful weather in the past few weeks.
"But the lights on the central promenade and in the centre help make it a great atmosphere for families to shop.
"There will be Crazy Bears Roadshow on Sunday and carol processions next week to make a real festive atmosphere.
"With cheap bus fares for children we are expecting families to pack in to the shops next week."
