IN JUNE I visited the British Military Cemetery in Trieste where, many years ago, I served with the South Lancashire Regiment, Support Company.
The 1946-1954 cemetery has a peaceful and appropriate setting. This, I hope, is a comfort to the families, relatives, friends and former servicemen who knew and remember the members of the Lancashire Regiment who lie in this cemetery.
The men are: South Lancashire Regiment: Privates R. W. Lister; J. Leyland; C. S. Greenwood and C. E. S. Kirk.
King's Own Royal Regiment: Sgt. R. Rutherford; Pte J. Ryan. Loyal Regiment: Sgt. H. Kempster; L/Cpl. R. Jones.
Lancashire Fusiliers: Capt. P. Pring; 2nd/Lt. S. H. Finlow; L/Cpl. B. M Jackson; Fus. B. Parker.
I attended a reunion held in Prestwich recently and we remembered the servicemen we had to leave in Trieste.
The city has hardly changed. Rossetti is occupied by the Italian Army who are also using part of Lazzaretto, once known as Gilbraltar Barracks. The border with Slovenia is, however, now much closer to Lazzaretto than it used to be all those years ago.
