COUNCIL bosses could be forced to rearrange traffic calming measures in Penwortham after drivers complained their cars were being damaged - as well as their health.
A series of speed reduction measures were implemented in the Cop Lane area of Penwortham earlier this year after concerns were raised about the number of cars using a new housing estate as a short-cut.
Following consultations with residents South Ribble Borough Council created speed humps in Walton Avenue, and 'speed cushions' in Blackthorn Drive, Broad Oak Road and Belgrave Avenue.
Just under two months after the speed cushions - raised concrete sections of the road - were installed council chiefs have being forced back to the drawing board after a series of complaints from drivers. Locals say their cars have been damaged when crossing the speed cushions at low speeds, and council bosses say they have received reports from people suffering 'uncomfortable or painful experiences' when driving along the route. Councillors were told of the problems at last week's development services committee meeting, where they were told despite the opposition, many residents were keen for phase two to be carried out, which includes the introduction of more speed cushions in nearby streets.
A council spokesman said: "Before the work began in August, residents were consulted to see what they wanted.
"However a number of residents have suffered discomfort and their cars are reported to have been damaged, even at low speeds.
"This is a valid scheme, with another phase planned, but the speed cushions are the main point of contention. If they could be modified to reduce their impact, it is anticipated much opposition would vanish."
