ALMOST one million cards and parcels dropped through the borough's letter boxes this week as our postmen and women rounded off their busiest time of the year.

And their amazing efforts were recognised by Bury's Mayor and Mayoress on Tuesday as they visited the Royal Mail sorting office at Wellington Street.

Councillor John Costello and his wife Anne shared a hearty meal with local posties before they set off on their delivery rounds.

The 7am visit was designed to show Coun Costello how staff cope during the traditionally hectic pre-Christmas period.

In a normal week Bury's 201 postmen and women deliver mail to 44,000 addresses around the borough.

In the run up to Christmas the number of items delivered rises to a startling 950,000 letters and cards per week.

And on a peak day postal workers can expect to deliver double the normal volume of mail.
