BURNLEY boss Stan Ternent vowed to give the Clarets fans something to celebrate again after they watched their side slump to a 4-2 defeat in the pouring rain at Gigg Lane yesterday, writes Pete Oliver.
Clarets supporters made up 4,229 of the gate of 9,115 - a welcome pay-day for the Shakers.
But those travelling fans who stayed to the end had only two injury-time goals to provide some festive cheer after Ternent's side had been 4-0 down and reduced to 10-men by half-time.
"The sad thing about it is we had a load of fans come again and we didn't give them anything to shout about, unfortunately. But we hope to put that right throughout the remainder of the season.
"And I still maintain we will be there or thereabouts at the end," insisted Ternent.
Steve Davis was sent off after just nine minutes for stopping a goalbound shot with his hand and Ternent added: "It was a disappointing result for us. Everything that could possibly go against us did in the first half of the game.
"In the second half I thought they did all right, I thought they showed a lot of character and kept pegging away and scored two goals.
"So out of all bad comes some good. That's two goals for, that's all we can take from yesterday."
Bury's joint player-manager Andy Preece, so often the scourge of Burnley throughout his career with Blackpool, Stockport and Wrexham, led by example by scoring two goals inside the first 10 minutes to set his side on the way to victory. But he admitted afterwards that he hadn't intended to play and would have named Paul Barnes in his starting line-up if the former Burnley striker hadn't gone down with 'flu.
Preece said: "Barney would have played and I wouldn't. I was gutted that he couldn't play but then happy that I could.
"We left it to the last minute but he was in a bad way and couldn't have played.
"We started off so well and that was the important thing. We knew it was going to be hard and physical but after the first 10 minutes we were 2-0 up.
"We played some great football, worked hard at closing them down and we got our just rewards." QUOTE OF THE DAY: "I still maintain we will be there or thereabouts at the end" - STAN TERNENT
