ORDINARY folk took the honours in the New Year's list with a foreman, receptionist, scrapyard worker and union secretary among the county's chosen few.

Former Blackburn vicar Chad Varah OBE, who founded the Samaritans, was made a CBE. And Michael Murray, general secretary of the Rossendale Union of Boot, Shoe and Slipper Operatives was delighted with his OBE.
