PEOPLE who claim council benefits in Blackburn and Darwen may have payments delayed while a new computer system is brought on line.

But the change from the old system will mean claims will be dealt with more speedily in future.

The old system closed down before Christmas and staff are unable to process new Council Tax and Housing Benefit claims or changes until the new computers are up and running.

In the meantime, provision has been made to pay people currently claiming benefit and new claims will be paid manually.

The council's rights, advice and entitlements staff are urging claimants to let them know as soon as possible of any change in their circumstances.

Anybody needing help or advice can telephone customer services in Blackburn on 01254 681809 or in Darwen on 01254 222170.

Coun Maureen Bateson, chairman of the council's rights, advice and entitlements committee said: "The new system will enable us to offer the best possible service for all our customers, but there will be a short period of time when normal services will be affected.

"Naturally, we regret any inconvenience but I am sure our customers will appreciate the quality of service we will be able to offer as a result of the improvements."
