A TEENAGER who was invited to take a girl home, ended up in police cells instead. Burnley magistrates heard how Kraig Tony Mellor, 19, was over the limit and was also banned from driving.

Mellor, of Garrick Street, Nelson, was disqualified from driving for 12 months and put on probation for a year. He must also attend the responsible drivers programme.

Mellor admitted driving with excess alcohol, no insurance, no test certificate and driving while disqualified, on January 8.

Julie Reddish, prosecuting, said police followed Mellor's car. It stopped and he made off. He was taken to the police station and the lowest of two breath tests was just over the limit.

John Rusius, defending, said Mellor's disqualification had run out on December 28, but he had been banned until he took a re-test. He had not passed that test.

Mellor had been out for a drink and had not been intending to drive home. He had an offer to take a girl home, was not going to let that pass by and his emotions got the better of him. Instead of spending time with the girl, he ended up in police cells.

Mr Rusius added the defendant had lost his job, could not get benefits for six months and was now trying to find alternative work.
