THE Bill to ban the hunting of wild mammals with dogs must be passed, for its supporters believe that the hunting and killing of wild animals by dogs inflicts unnecessary suffering.

Drag hunts, where hounds and riders follow an artificial scent, is a realistic replacement for those who wish to enjoy the thrill of the chase. This ensures that the sporting needs of hunt members are catered for and job losses minimised.

Some wild mammals must be controlled, but in all cases there are more selective and humane solutions than setting dogs on to them for the primary purpose of pleasure.
