A VALUABLE piece of St Helens history has been stolen.

And now members of the Sankey Canal Restoration Society are asking members of the public to help them find it

The specially commissioned model of a Mersey flat boat was stolen from the Rangers Visitor Centre at Blackbrook.

Flat boats navigated the Sankey canal in the late 1700s and the 1800s and the model has been displayed at a number of venues in the borough.

A spokesman for SCARS said: "The vessel is too big to go unnoticed and wherever it is now someone will have seen it. Anyone who has any information about the flat's whereabouts should get in touch with the society's secretary via the reception desk at the Groundwork Trust in Shaw Street (tel. 01744 739396).

"As a registered charity the society cannot afford to lose such a significant part of the canal's heritage."
