EIGHTEEN students from southern Italy are taking part in an art project at Cowley High School, Hard Lane.
The students and three of their teachers, from the Istituto Magistrale Statale in Matera, are staying at the Lindisfarne Hostel, St Cuthberts High School, Parr, for two weeks and the exchange forms part of a joint project based on the works of Carlo Levi who was a doctor, artist and writer in Italy.
The project will involve portrait painting and mask making based on paintings by Carlo Levi, who was exiled to Luciana between 1935 and 1936 for his anti-fascist activities.
The Italian students will also be taking part in music and English lessons at Cowley and will be visiting Manchester, Liverpool and York during their stay.
It is hoped that Cowley pupils will go out to Italy in September and the school is busy raising funds and seeking sponsorship to meet the oustanding cost of the exchange which will be partly funded by the European Education Programme.
