SHOPPERS will benefit from road works in Bury town centre, say highways bosses.
Workmen are turning Crompton Street into a pedestrian-friendly route which will complement the latest Mill Gate expansion on the site of the former Central Methodist Church.
While developers MEPC are concentrating on the bottom part of the street up to the old Post Office, Bury Council has taken the opportunity to upgrade the upper part nearest The Rock.
This section will be block-paved and make the road safer for pedestrians, although it will not be completely car-free. Delivery vehicles and disabled badge holders will still have access, but general traffic will be stopped during the day.
The work is expected to take eight weeks.
