IT all added up to success for Unsworth CP pupil, Matthew Phair, when he fought off tough competition to reach the final of a national maths competition.
The ten-year-old whizzkid took part in the competition organised to launch the Year of Maths.
He entered the competition through the Maths Stuff 4 School scheme - a nationwide token collection to provide millions of pounds worth of free maths equipment to schools.
Matthew was asked to think of a logo to represent Maths Years 2000 and his entry "Kal-culate" was one of ten entries chosen out of 50,000 entries.
Matthew travelled to London to attend a presentation ceremony. Although he was not the overall winner, he says he was happy to get as far as he did.
"I was delighted to get to the final. I was very surprised but I am very happy and honoured," he said.
Headteacher Mrs Christine Reynolds was also thrilled.
She said: "We are all very proud of Matthew. The competition was fierce and he did extremely well."
