FOUR young men were injured when their car hit a roundabout, turned over in mid-air and landed on its roof against steel railings.

Twelve firefighters worked for more than an hour with paramedics and police to free the four Chorley youths, who were trapped in the accident at 11.40pm yesterday.

Sub officer Brad Walker of Chorley fire station, said the Nissan Sunny appeared to have hit the kerb of the Water Street roundabout, hurtled into the air and landed on its roof.

He said: "The impact caused the roof to come down, crushing the vehicle. They were all squashed in like sardines in a can."

Sub officer Walker said two of the men escaped with only cuts and bruises, one was more seriously injured and one was unconscious while the firefighters freed him. He said: "The paramedics stabilised the man who was unconscious while he was still in the vehicle, which gave us a bit more time to get him out."

All four men were taken to Chorley District Hospital.

The scene of the accident was cordoned off for several hours while police investigated. There was serious disruption to Chorley town centre traffic.
