ALMOST 40 years ago, motorists in Burnley were geared up for their first spin on the town's new inner ring road - although it amounted then to only the short length seen here (left) between the pile of rubble at the left and the still-incomplete shops opposite at the right that abutted the then-new Keirby Hotel.
The new road, stretching from the junction with the short length of Yorkshire Street - where the pinnacled old Central Billiard Hall can be seen - to the now-vanished Odeon Cinema, from which this view was taken, came into use in March, 1961.
At the same time, demolition was being completed of the properties in the block contained by the nearby canal culvert and Yorkshire Street and Gunsmith Lane. Among those that disappeared was the imposing Yorkshire Hotel.
