WEST Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alan Miller is a target for Blackburn Rovers as they bid to find a replacement for injured John Filan.
And they could land the experienced 29-year-old former Arsenal and Middlesbrough man for as little as £50-100,000.
But Rovers might face competition from Premiership strugglers Bradford City, whose two first-choice keepers are both injured.
Miller, who was outstanding for West Brom when they were beaten in a third round FA Cup replay at Ewood in December, is out of contract at the end of the season.
Talks with Albion over a new deal have broken down, leading to Miller losing his place to Chris Adamson and he will be able to leave in summer on a 'Bosman free'.
So the cash-strapped Midlands club are anxious to obtain any sort of compensation they can.
Midlands sources confirmed today that Rovers have already been in touch with Albion and have been talking about a fee in the region of £50,000. But Hawthorns boss Brian Little is believed to want nearer £100,000.
Either way, it is cheap business if Rovers can solve the problem caused by Filan's shoulder operation.
Bradford, however, could force an auction if they step up their interest and the player might fancy another go at the top flight. Meanwhile, Darren Peacock reflected on the blunders at the back which are threatening to wreck Rovers' promotion bid and insisted: "We can put it right."
The Ewood central defender believes Rovers must learn from their mistakes.
But he admitted there was no hiding place over the errors which have cost the club dearly in recent games.
"People make mistakes, that's a fact of life," said the former Newcastle defender.
"But we need to get back to the way we were when we were keeping clean sheets.
"Obviously, 10 goals in three games isn't good enough. But we have played well away from home before.
"We just have to keep working on the problem, talk about it and pick out where we are going wrong.
"There isn't a lot more we can do except look at the goals we have conceded and learn from our mistakes."
The reason why Rovers have suddenly disintegrated remains something of a mystery - even to the men at the heart of things.
"It's not caused by a lack of effort or work throughout the week," said Peacock.
"But it's a matter of trying to put your finger on the problem and then rectifying it."
And he feels there is still plenty of time for Rovers to achieve their goal.
"We were terribly disappointed at Bolton but we have to get our heads up, because we are still in a good position," he added.
"Of course we would like to be a lot higher but we are still there and, if we can put things right, we will still have a great chance (of going up)."
The holes which have appeared in defence are also a major concern to manager Tony Parkes. "We have let in 10 in three games and, when you are conceding goals like that, you are going to have it all on to win matches," he said.
"I feel we are leaking too many goals and it's an uphill battle if you do that."
Parkes is hoping to see several players make more progress tonight when Rovers are due to entertain Sunderland in an FA Premier Reserve League (North) game at Ewood (kick-off 7pm).
Most attention will be on the likes of long-term absentees Garry Flitcroft and Billy McKinlay. Rovers' squad is: Fettis, Richardson, Harkness, Flitcroft, Hawe, Broomes, Dunn, McKinlay, Baldacchino, Ostenstad, Forsyth, Murphy, Bingham, Burgess, O'Brien, Howson, Douglas.
Meanwhile, Tranmere Rovers have not yet followed up their interest in Ewood midfielder Wayne Gill.
