PLANS to break with tradition and introduce voting in council elections on Saturdays have been given the green light by councillors.
Two special polling booths will be set up in Blackburn and Darwen town centres on Saturday , April 29, in advance of the date of the actual election on Thursday, May 4.
Councils across the country have been encouraged to make innovations to try and improve turnout at local polls.
Turnout in some Blackburn and Darwen wards plunged below 20 per cent in the May 1999 elections and the borough will now be the first in East Lancashire to introduce reforms to try and reverse the trend.
It is hoped passing shoppers who would not normally vote will take to the polling booths on the Saturday.
