A MAGISTRATE who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of being drunk and disorderly on a train was among rail users who let off steam at a question and answer session.
Sandra Taylor, of Entwistle Hall, Entwistle, Turton, appeared before Blackburn magistrates yesterday and was later seen taking part in a visit by top line management of First North Western Trains at Blackburn Railway Station.
The visit, part of a regional tour by the train operator, aimed to let directors hear first hand about concerns of commuters.
Lack of information about late or cancelled trains were among the main complaint.
Brian Haworth, of Langho, near Blackburn, who is vice-chairman of Clitheroe Rail Users' Group, said: "The information system on outlying stations is very hit and miss. People often have no idea what is happening with the train they want to travel on."
Brian Webster, of Mill Hill, Blackburn, added: "Punctuality and reliability is diabolical. I've come here today to tell the bosses how frustrating it is when trains keep being cancelled or run late, especially when it means missing a connection." David Southworth, 35, is visually impaired and uses a guide dog. He uses services run by First North Western five times a week and told the team about the obstacles he faces. "My main problem is the visibility of the doors on the train. They need to have contrasting colours. It is fine if there I am on a staffed station, but often I have no way of finding my way on to the train and end up having to get a taxi," said Mr Southworth, of Vernon Street, Darwen.
Managing director of First North Western Trains David Franks said: "We have heard some genuine concerns and it is great that our customers feel they can come along and talk to us in person in a constructive way.
"We are aware that there are some problems that need to be addressed. To help with this a new manager, who will look after the Manchester to Clitheroe line route, is to be appointed next week.
"Taking the management team out of the relative comfort and safety of the boardroom is an absolute must and serves to provide a great focus."
David Kaye, operations director of First North Western Trains, added: "We have had problems with our public address system which gives information to outlying stations. This will soon be working again so announcements will get through."
