LIBERAL Democrats in Pendle are urging Lancashire County Council not to let the higher-than-expected teachers' pay settlement hit education.
Coun David Whipp said his Liberal group would be putting forward a budget package designed to protect schooling.
The problem for the ruling Labour group is the extra £2.3million the teachers' rise will cost the authority.
Labour has said that budgets for schools would be limited and schools would have to live within the limits.
Coun Whipp said: "Schools should not be left in the lurch having to fund this multi-million pound shortfall."
He accused Labour of hype over their promise of extra money for schools and claimed the increase would only cover pay and price inflation. He said: "Any real growth from the county would be swallowed by the teachers' pay deal."
