MOST folk know that Italian and German prisoners of war were once held at a camp close to the Haydock-Ashton border.
But how many realise that Garswood Park had earlier been a base for American Marines who left there to take part in the Normandy Landings?
Now, a Haydock reader (who wishes to remain anonymous) wonders if anyone can flesh out those details and perhaps provide personal memories of that wartime period when the Yanks hit the local scene.
If so, I'd welcome a line or two on the subject . . .
