PRESTON schoolchildren have escaped unscathed following the county's lollipop manning crisis.

While the new year 'flu epidemic gripped lollipop men and women across the county, Preston sufferers received the help of mobile divisions to get children safely home from school.

Others weren't so lucky, with a site in Burnley remaining unmanned for a staggering 50 hours over a two-week period.

The crisis has sparked pleas from the School Crossing Patrol Division in Lancashire to get as much help as they can on the unmanned sites, with the service currently struggling to maintain cover at the 403 crossing sites in the county.

John West, leader of Lancashire County Council, said: "I would encourage anyone who has time to spare to think about joining our School Crossing Service. We need people urgently and full training is given."
