COUNCIL leader Marie Rimmer says that St Helens will not be giving up any of its European funding to support projects in Liverpool city centre.

Councillor Rimmer joined other Merseyside leaders at a meeting to hear details of a scheme put forward by Liverpool to earmark a substantial amount of Objective One money to fund city-centre development projects.

However, while agreeing support for Liverpool city centre, Councillor Rimmer made it clear that it would not be at the expense of St Helens.

She said: "There is no way that St Helens is willing to give up any part of its funding. St Helens has problems which need addressing and the money is needed to fund projects to attract new industry, create new jobs and improve the environment. We have heard what Liverpool has had to say about their plans, but in our view they will need specific additional funding."
