CARR Mill could have its own railway station following a meeting between St Helens Council leader Marie Rimmer and Merseytravel officials.
And although there is no timetable yet for the building of the proposed station, the agreement in principle has been welcomed by local campaigner Barbara Jakubiak.
Mrs Jakubiak, who was invited to meet Merseytravel chairman, Mark Dowd, to put forward her case for the station which will provide a new link on the St Helens-Wigan Line, said: " I am delighted. This will put Carr Mill back on the transport map and replace the station we lost years ago. It is a brilliant location near the East Lancashire Road and I am sure it will do a lot to encourage people to leave their cars and travel by public transport."
Councillor Rimmer commented: "This station was part of our successful bid for cash from the Single Regeneration Budget and I am glad that Merseytravel agree with our strategy and endorse the plan. As a council we are committed to the policy of creating an integrated transport system that offers people a real alternative to using their car.
