ONE lucky shopper got more than she bargained for when she called into a Blackburn supermarket - her boyfriend proposed over the public address system.

Julie Glover, 29, was in Asda in Grimshaw Park when staff Tannoyed for her to go to the store cafe where boyfriend Garry Scott, 30, was waiting with a microphone to propose.

To the delight of shoppers, Julie had no hesitation in agreeing.

Julie, of Brookway, Blackburn, said: "I was shocked. I just went to do my shopping - I didn't expect all this.

I heard the announcement and I said to my daughter 'That's mummy's name', I just didn't know what to expect but I said yes straight away because I love him to bits."

Garry, of Essex Close, Blackburn, was contacted by Asda staff when they spotted the romantic poem and proposal he left for Julie on the store's Valentine's message board.

It said: "You're like all my Christmases rolled into one, you're loving and giving and so full of fun, you're like winning the lottery, morning sunlight, you chill out my days and warm up my nights. So tell me you love me, tell me it's true, tell me you'll marry me in 2002."

Asda event organiser Carole Davis said: "He had just left it there for all and sundry to see so we thought we'd help him do something really special." Staff organised a romantic table for two with champagne, cake and flowers for Julie and a cuddly toy for her seven-year-old daughter Rebekah.

Garry, a call centre clerk at Express Gifts in Clayton-le-Moors, said: "She'd absolutely no idea. She said I'm not romantic and it was very public, but I just wanted everyone to know how I feel.

"I was really nervous. I had a stomach full of butterflies. I'm just glad she said yes."
