POLICE today ordered a get-tough clampdown on "mindless" violence after gangs of youths armed with home made weapons, hammers, cricket bats and pieces of metal, clashed in a large scale disturbance.

Four people were arrested yesterday following the incident in the Duke Bar area of Burnley and police say more arrests are anticipated.

The young men were released on police bail pending further investigations.

Inspector Steven Hartley said investigations had revealed that numerous home-made weapons were used in the fracas involving between 15-20 local young men.

He warned: "We will not tolerate this type of behaviour in Burnley.

"We will ensure that these people understand that mindless violence will not be tolerated and we will vigorously pursue those people who believe that they can engage in this type of confrontation." Mr Hartley added: "We will not tolerate it. This area has seen significant reductions in crime over the last 12 months and the vast majority of the community are law abiding citizens who like us do not want to see crime rise again."

Police are maintaining a high profile presence in the area and are installing a CCTV camera so that activity can be monitored.

Crimestoppers posters are being distributed in the locality.

Police want to stress that anyone can ring the 0800 555111 confidential hot line number without fear of being identified.

A reward may be paid for information about any criminal activity in the area.
