PAY rises in the engineering industry are holding steady according to the body which represents dozens of East Lancashire firms.

The Engineering Employers' Federation said the average pay settlement level for the three months to the end of January was 2.4 per cent, the same level as for the three months to December 1999.

Although there was a reduction in the number of pay freezes reported during the period, down from one in six settlements to one in seven settlements, there was a slight increase in the number of pay settlements reported as being deferred to a later date.

"These latest figures include nearly 200 settlements for January which is traditionally the month when most engineering pay settlements occur.

"They add weight to our view that there are no wage inflationary pressures in this sector," says the federation.

The EEF's February Pay Bulletin analyses 271 reported settlements covering 33,055 employees. Of these, 54 were made last Novemberaveraging 2.3 per, 28 in December averaging 2.7 per and 189 in January averaging 2.4 per cent.
