MOURNERS gathered at St Ambrose Church, Leyland, to pay their last respects to a much-loved local character.
Footpath sweeper David Harrison, 53, of Oak Tree View, Wigan Road, Leyland, affectionately known as 'Leyland's own Father Christmas' because of his long silver hair and beard, died peacefully earlier this month.
Following a funeral service at the Moss Lane church, Farington, on Friday last week, he was buried with his parents at St Andrew's CGhurch, in Church Road, Leyland.
For the past 12 years he has swept the streets of Leyland, Lostock Hall, Penwortham and neighbouring Longton and Much Hoole.
With his jolly personality and distinctive Father Christmas looks, David always raised a smile and was happy to have a natter, even on a dreary winter day.
In 1998 he received a runner-up award in the North West Silver Broom Awards, organised by the Tidy Britain Group, after being tipped for the top prize by members of the local public.
But eight months ago, after being diagnosed with cancer, David decided to hang up his broom as he had become too ill to work.
His absence was sadly missed and staff at South Ribble Borough Council received dozens of calls from the public, asking after him.
David died peacefully in the Royal Preston Hospital on February 7 with his brother Stephen and sister-in-law Debra at his side.
