LEIGH and Wigan magistrates have been recruited to help combat increasing trespass and vandalism on railway lines.

The new Railtrack campaign "Lives on The Line" follows the loss of six young lives in the north west in the past two years.

In a presentation JPs heard that during 1998 over 2,500 incidences of trespass and vandalism has been reported in the area.

Railtrack is working with British Transport Police to inform the public of the dangers.

Speakers at the seminar included First North Western train driver Chris Crompton, Sgt Gerald Hindley of the British Transport Police and Railtrack manager, Robert Mitchell, himself a magistrate.
