HOMELESS bats and birds are to get a roof over their heads thanks to a bunch of Blackpool youngsters.

The pupils of Palatine High School have made 50 specialised boxes to be used in the Watson Road and Stanley parks.

And last week they left their classrooms behind and ventured into the great outdoors to attach the boxes to the trees.

Pupils have been working with bat experts David MacLean and Dave McGrath who helped draw up the exact specifications each box would need to fit.

The project not only helped them with their GCSE woodwork but will also help the council with its five-year national bat monitoring programme.

In fact, so impressed were the council that the youngsters have now been asked to create more bird boxes, only this time for the ducks at Blackpool Zoo.
