Widnes St Maries 8, Haydock 23

HAYDOCK kept their title bid on course with victory in this tough encounter.

Bloor put the Yickers in front with a drop goal after eight minutes. But Maries replied with a try after 19 minutes. But within two minutes Haydock regained the lead with the best try of the match. Good passing and strong running involving Bloor, Scott, Dolan and Hull resulted in Haughey scoring under the posts. Haughey converted.

But the Widnes team reclaimed the lead after 30 minutes with an unconverted try. In a ding-dong battle Bloor side stepped his way over through three or four defenderst. And just before half-time O'Garra and Lowe sent winger Tickle scooting over from 25 yards. Haughey converted.

Midway through the second half a good high kick which was fumbled by St Maries, and Tickle picked up to score a try, but for a reason the referee disallowed the try. Haydocks defence was firm, and with eight minutes to go Haydock finally wrapped the game up with Maries pressing them through a wide ball out which was not collected too cleanly and winger Tickle picked it up and went 80 yards to score a good try. Haughey converted.

Outstanding for Haydock were Bloor, Haughey, Carroll, Cahlin and Dolan.
