A NEW Leigh clinic for patients with skin conditions will open at the end of the month.
It will be named in honour of one of Wigan's most famous Victorian clinicians, Dr Prosser White, who specialised in the field.
But the very best in 21st century care will be offered at The Prosser White Dermatology Centre at Leigh Infirmary from February 28.
Extra medical and nursing staff have been brought in to reduce waiting time for appointments, and the new accommodation comprises two new operating theatres for minor surgery and additional consulting rooms. A comprehensive range of clinics and treatments will be provided under one roof, including phototherapy, therapeutic bathing, leg ulcer treatment, day treatment for psoriasis and eczema, and patch testing for allergy detection.
Routine nurse-led specialist clinics will also be held for patients with warts and conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, offering a combination of treatment, advice and counselling.
The Wigan and Leigh Health Services NHS Trust is also anticipating an expansion in the opportunity for medical staff training, due to the improved teaching facilities available.
Born in Wigan in 1855 Dr Prosser White's achievements won acclaim locally and nationally.
In addition to being the founder of the dermatology department at Wigan's Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and a life vice president of the hospital, he was also made president of the London Dermatological Society.
