MORE than 450 cars were stopped by police who set up roadside checks in a bid to find fresh clues to the shooting of Blackburn teenager Adam Hayes.

Fifteen officers quizzed drivers and passengers in the Witton Park area of Blackburn between 8pm last night and 1am today exactly a week after the 17-year-old was gunned down.

Motorists were shown an artist's impression of the middle-aged gunman and asked if they had been in the area at the same time last week.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Kellett said several people said they had information about the shooting and their claims will be investigated this week.

He said: "The roadside checks were well worthwhile and the results were encouraging," he added.

Police also plan to distribute thousands of leaflets with the artist's impression to every household in the Blackburn area this week. Detectives have launched a huge manhunt for the gunman and have revealed the man has approached two other groups of youngsters in recent weeks.

Adam was with three friends when they came across the gunman in a bus shelter near the junction of Preston Old Road and Tower Road.

The man chased them before shooting the student in the chest before running off into Witton Park.

Armed police sealed off the park and surrounding area just after midnight last Saturday.

The youngster suffered a collapsed lung and lost several pints of blood.

Police have circulated an artist's impression of the gunman to schools in the area and said they were investigating dozens of leads from members of the public.

The man was described as about 5ft 9in, with thick glasses, grey hair and a Blackburn accent.
