IAN WRIGHT trained with his new Burnley team-mates for the first time yesterday and then admitted that he had been overwhelmed by the response to his arrival at Turf Moor.

Wright caused a sensation when he joined the Clarets from Celtic earlier this week and his presence guaranteed a sell-out for this afternoon's visit of promotion rivals Wigan Athletic.

The Burnley fans have been whipped into a frenzy by the signing of the former Arsenal legend.

And Wright was eager to fulfil that optimism on his debut for the club.

"It's been overwhelming to be honest and I can't wait to go out there just to show them that I'm the right man to come here," he said after completing his first training session at the club's Gawthorpe training ground.

"I've always got a good feeling about the games I'm playing in because I always feel very confident that I can get chances and score.

"And if I can get enough chances I know I will score goals.

"So hopefully the fans will come, the atmosphere will be good and hopefully I will contribute to us winning."

Wright donned Burnley colours for the first time yesterday morning and quickly settled into the Clarets' set-up under the watchful eye of boss Stan Ternent, who last worked with the 36-year-old striker when he came in to the professional game at Crystal Palace in the mid-1980s. "It's always nice to meet the lads and get a feel for the place and everything.

"The lads are a good bunch. But I know about them from Mitchell so it wasn't a problem.

"The training pitch was heavy but we had a nice little game and the pitch tomorrow won't be that heavy, so it's something to look forward to," added Wright, who was looking forward to some instant chemistry when the real business got underway.

"I am hoping so because it's a very big game and one we need to win, or definitely not lose.

"It's going to be a good atmosphere so that always helps.

"And apparently the Burnley fans are always behind the players," he said.

There was certainly an upbeat mood at Gawthorpe yesterday as Burnley worked on providing the perfect finish to a magical week at Turf Moor.

And Wright was bidding to extend an impressive record and help Ternent's men close in on the automatic promotion places.

"I've scored on all my club debuts. It's something everybody's always looking out for so it would be cool," he said.
