A NEW crackdown on criminals goes some way to reassuring the public that police are serious about reducing crime, says Pendle MP Gordon Prentice.

He welcomed new targets which aims to see cuts of more than 30 per cent in vehicle crime and house burglaries in Lancashire over the next five years.

Mr Prentice said: "The Government is committed to making major inroads into levels of crime but it is also aware that targets are not the only way to reduce criminal activity.

"All elements of the community, from employers to voluntary organisations and local councils, have their part to play in ensuring the public are protected."

The MP said recent CCTV surveillance projects in Brierfield and Nelson were the sort of initiatives the Government welcomed.
