BURNLEY winger Glen Little was set to have an X-ray today on the leg injury which forced him out of Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Wigan Athletic at Turf Moor.

But Clarets chief Stan Ternent believes the injury is not as bad as first feared and hopes to have the influential wide-man back sooner rather than later as the Second Division promotion race starts to hot up.

Little had to be stretchered off after taking a heavy knock on his shin with 15 minutes left of a keenly fought Lancashire derby.

Initially, it was feared Little may have broken his leg but the injury now appears to be heavy bruising.

"Glen is having an X-ray this afternoon so we will know more about it after that," said Ternent.

"But I don't think it's as serious as people first thought."

Wrightmania hit Turf Moor on Saturday as former Arsenal legend Ian Wright made his eagerly anticipated Burnley debut after signing from Celtic.

And though the 36-year-old striker failed to find the net for the first time on his debut for a new club, Ternent was delighted by his all-round contribution.

"You can see that he's still sharp and he will score goals, there's no question about that," said the Burnley chief.

"I just wish the rest of the season can be like Saturday, crowd-wise and everything.

"It's captured everyone's imagination.

"And anyone playing with Ian is going to learn a great deal.

"He's obviously still got a lot to offer and I'm delighted he has deceided to join us.

"But there were other excellent performances. "The back three went three against three all the game and they restricted them to just one chance at the end."

Wright looked Burnley's main threat and only a couple of thrilling saves by Wigan keeper Roy Carroll denied him a debut goal.

However, the best chance of the game fell to Wright's best mate Mitchell Thomas in the dying seconds, but his thumping volley came back off the crossbar to leave Ternent frustrated.

"I was a little disappointed in the end because we could have nicked it," said Ternent.

"I didn't think we were very good in the first half by our standards but in the second half I thought we were the better side.

"We created numerous chances but unfortunately none of them went in for us.

"In fairness to Wigan, though, they are not up at the top of the league and haven't lost away from home because they are a poor side.

"We showed our own credentials and I was delighted with the lads.

"We certainly shaded the game and it's another point gained.

"And now we are at the stage where we've got a third of the season left, we are still up there and we've shown we are as good as anything in the League.

"So let's get on with it and let's see where it takes us.

"The nearer you get to the line, the more difficult it becomes.

"But we are doing extremely well at the moment."

Burnley's youth team beat Preston North End 2-1 in the Youth Alliance thanks to goals from Tony Bowden and Eamonn Kelly.
