JUST for fun, why not stimulate the family's maths muscles by having a go at the latest activities published in our series designed to support the bi-monthly themes of the Maths Year 2000 initiative?

The theme for January and February is Maths on Time and the suggested activities are adapted from our NIE Pick and Mix literacy and numeracy resource for KS2 upwards and available to schools and colleges within our circulation area.

Look at our TV listings pages and try the activities below:

Pick two of today's TV programmes, suitable for someone of your age. What time can you see these and how long will they last?

Choose any television channel and re-write the schedule using 24-hour clock times.

Look at all the programmes broadcast on each channel today and list them under headings, eg: news, documentary, films, soaps, comedy, drama, sport, or other.

You can simplify the task by limiting the length of time you are looking. If you want a more difficult challenge, try noting the length of each programme and finding which channel spends the longest time broadcasting each of the categories.
