THE Black Police Association today spoke of its hopes that a Lancashire policeman arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle £1million worth of heroin into Britain will get a fair trial.

PC Shabir Rehman Abdul Mubarak, who served in Blackburn as a special constable, was arrested in Bombay with four other men after they were allegedly found with a box containing 5kgs of superior quality heroin.

It is understood that he has been remanded in custody and will appear in a Bombay court next Monday.

PC Mubarak, who lives in Lostock Hall and is based at Bamber Bridge police station, allegedly used his police warrant card to try and smuggle the drugs last Friday.

Chairman of Lancashire Black Police Association, PC Reehaina Saddique, said today that PC Mubarak was a member of the association. She said: "The association is anxious to be reassured that individuals receive a fair trial and that the material facts are presented in a court of law."

If found guilty, PC Mubarak could face ten years in an Indian prison.
