BURNLEY Rotarians tucked into a "frugal meal" to serve up a financial feast for charity.

There was only soup and a roll on offer to Burnley Rotary Club at the town's Alexander Hotel, as members donated the difference between the snack and a full meal to Sight Savers International.

The annual fund-raiser made £500 for the charity, whose representative Lorraine Brierley joined members and spoke of the organisation's achievements and aims for the future.

She told them that Sight Savers was founded in 1950 and has helped to restore sight to four million people in more than 10 countries throughout Africa and Asia.

The charity intends to introduce new technology to manufacture high-quality, low-cost intra-ocular lenses and establish training centres for surgeons.

At the end of the talk, club president Jeffrey Pollard presented Miss Brierley with a cheque for £500.
